Surgery & Aftercare

Post Surgical Instructions.

Your pet may resume regular activities in 3-5 days after surgery.  They can eat their normal diet and sutures will be removed by us in 10 days

Signs to Watch for
•Loss of appetite for over 2 days
•Refusal to drink water for 24 hours
•Weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, or depression

Spay Procedure

A “spay” is an ovariohysterectomy, in which both ovaries and the uterus have been removed.  Remember, keeping your pet’s activity restricted and preventing self trauma from licking are key factors in ensuring a successful surgery. We send all pets home with pain medication helping them have a comfortable recovery.

Spaying is important because it reduces the chance of mammary cancer and uterine infections.

Neuter Procedure

A “neuter” involves removing the testicles from the scrotum.

Neutering cuts down on male problematic behaviors such as aggression, urine marking, wandering, trying to dominate other dogs, and also decreases their risk for prostate cancer.

Declaw Procedure

At Dogwood Animal Hospital, we only declaw the front feet of cats.  Pain medication will be administered prior to surgery and for several days after surgery, ensuring your cat has a comfortable recovery.

We encourage you to declaw your cat while still young if the procedure is necessary. This will allow for less pain and faster recovery. After this procedure is done, your cat should be kept strictly indoors because his defenses are now gone.
